Creating community during COVID-19

Creating Community During COVID-19

As the global pandemic COVID-19 swept the nation, Americans quickly had to adjust to a new way of doing things. From working to socializing to buying groceries, citizens everywhere have been called upon to help “flatten the curve” by staying at home. This has left many people feeling isolated and disconnected. Fortunately, creating community during COVID-19 is possible even while maintaining safe distancing practices.

Now, a couple of months later, we are beginning to see what lessons we have learned over the past weeks and have created new priorities for what we hold near and dear. For many Americans, the sense of community created by COVID-19 has brought people closer together with their neighbors and the places in which they live. Everything from neighborhood zoom calls to donating homemade masks to people in need, supporting your community can come in many shapes and sizes.

Here are a few ways to create community in your area:

Shop Local

This is a big one. While it can be much more convenient to go online and order from an online retailer, consider purchasing from a local store instead. Small retail stores have been hit hard during the global pandemic, so supporting these businesses through your patronage may mean the difference between being able to stay open or having to close down.

Eat Local

Like small retailers, local restaurants have lost a lot of their income during COVID-19. Some states are now allowing restaurants to partially open up to in-person dining, with limited seating. However, restaurants run on a very tight profit margin, so it’s important that community members support their favorite restaurants either by ordering takeout or dining in, as safety and social distancing allows.

Invest Local

With interest rates at historic lows, now is a great time to invest in your community by buying or refinancing a home. When you find a community that you love, you care about what happens to that community. By investing in a home, you are able to make a tangible difference in your community.
